I knew I wanted to make a chess set but was unsure how I wanted to do it. I decided to explore the limits of a mould itself, wondering if I could cast an entire chess set out of one mould by adding inserts to change the shape. I visualised this by creating 3D models of each piece, starting with a block and carving into it. This allowed me to see how I would use my cuboid mould to create each piece.

After taking my designs to the technician, however, we decided that the actual casting process would be a lot easier and produce better results if I used my models to 3D print each piece and created the mould from them. This would mean that I could repeat a piece exactly if I did something wrong the first time and make more chess sets following this while still maintaining my design of them all fitting into the same space. Visually, this design gives all of my pieces a sense of belonging together.
